Our family's experience, would not recommend
Did not have a good experience, lack of communication and follow through, locking the front door after hours and having to wait 20-30 minutes to get someone to open it. They moved [name removed] without notice, did not reconnect her TV or Phone and we didn't know until days later when we came to visit her. When [name removed] became confused, disoriented and argumentative they issued a 10 day eviction notice. They did have a pleasant activities director, [name removed], and the dining room staff seemed helpful and patient.

The staff is so friendly and patient. My mother is a difficult person and they have cared for her so well that she's actually happy. She can't wait to see her friends in the dining hall every day and even participate in making crafts. This facility has help heal my relationship with her. Caring for a parent is an exhausting job.

Great community
I just moved my great uncle in last month and he loves this place, staff and community members. He says the meals are decent and portions plentiful. It isn’t a hassle signing him in/out to go places with family but there are measures in place where he just doesn’t wonder off unsupervised in the world. [name removed] made the transition smooth for us as this is the first time dealing with this sort of thing. Also there is a lot of vets here and my uncle being ex army medic fitted right in with his war stories along with so many others. I feel they really care about the seniors here and all the staff here are so friendly and welcoming from the front desk to housekeeping, nurses and chefs and just everyone I’ve made contact with. My uncle does an exercise class every morning before breakfast, they keep a full schedule of activities for your loved one to partake in. I invite all to at least take a tour if looking to place someone especially a veteran.

Thank you for the gem comment! We are all gems and have a purpose here...making loved ones feel comfortable and loved the moment they become family. Everyone is expected to treat our residents as if they were our family. It's the reason we all chose healthcare. Making a difference in people's lives is our mission.

A great extended family
A very welcoming community. Location is in a residential area and very accessible to shopping, doctors, hospitals as needed. Very lovely place with apartments to fit ones needs, singles or couples. Staff is professional yet very friendly going out of their way to learn everyone's name and to tend to their needs. Transportation to doctor appointment is provided as well as weekly outings for shopping, dining out experiences, banking needs and occasional tours to events in town. A new resident is immediately made to feel welcome and introduced to the other residents. All questions are answered quickly and any help one might need is readily available. There are daily activities such as bingo, exercise classes, knitting, word games and many others with special occasions featuring refreshments, entertainment and talent shows. It's like meeting a new family and new friends daily.

Overall a nice community.
We cannot rate the activities as our loved one never went to any. Mom moved out yesterday as she fell in the bathroom and started going down hill. She went on hospice. Got bed sores and was no longer appropriate for assisted living. She now lives in a group home.

Both Assisted Living and Memory Care units have scheduled housekeeping and daily sterilization of all furniture and floors. Incontinence "accidents" especially in a dedicated Alzheimer's environment do occur and every effort to maintain a safe and clean environment are taken to address them quickly. Sometimes it can be challenging. Families can visit Resident apartments and be critical of cleanliness. In assisted Living, residents must maintain their own apartments cleanliness between cleaning days. It's not like a hotel that comes in and cleans daily. Memory Care due to extraordinary high incontinence with Alzheimer's can be most challenging even though it's staff with the regulatory 6-1 ratio. We have a very high standard of accountability in both environments, but timeliness is not always the case especially in the community areas. ALL COMMUNITIES ARE NOT PERFECT OBVIOSULY as they are subject to incidents 24 hrs a day. Training however is one area that is held to a superior standard. The staff are required to attend 40 hours of training initially and must pass tests to be certified. Ongoing refreshers are mandatory every 6 months in addition to monthly specific training topics on behavior and care. Every staff member including management must attend and pass these tests in order to remain employed here. There is no Geriatric Medical Training however as assisted living is standby assist and are non-medical.

Highly recommend
My loved ones are still pretty independent and don't need much care. The food needs more variety. The value for the money was better than most places we looked. They are still having a hard time adjusting to not being able to get up and go and do like they used to. Staff have been very helpful. Highly recommend Desert View.

Great input. Desert View listen to the input and upgraded our dining experience by adding a new Dining Director that has over 10 years in assisted living and a restaurant background and it shows. The residents are raving about the changes in the menu and her creativity, meals taste and garnishing. We still have to be watchful of adding salt and limiting any use of prepackaged foods as most seniors have to watch their sodium intake. She meets with a Dietician monthly to review menus and the residents once a month to review the upcoming 30-day menu and get recommendations for changes they want. The residents have been raving about the change and appreciated the change in our program. Thank you for entrusting your loved ones to our care.

Our families experience
There is always room for improvement, but the staff is always making the facilities spotless! Friendliness of the staff is a 5!! Smiling faces. Amazing attentive to residents, wonderful communication. Always something to do . They decorate for all seasons and holidays! Very comfortable and cheerful when you enter. The care my mother needs is same across the industry my decision was based on location to family which the housing cost is a bit more. Might add about Facility- they are NOT quick to repair/up grade but we would recommend Desert View to other families

Thank you for your review. You are absolutely correct that there is always room for improvement and it''s always our focus. To address maintenance concerns, all requests are electronically logged onto the Maintenance Portal by our front desk or Maintenance team. The Director now must clear an entry respectively within 24hrs unless it was placed on a weekend and is a non-essential emergency. This will ensure all tasks are completed. no longer than 48 hrs unless marked an immediate emergency. Wea re all about accountability with every staff member. This was very helpful.

Disappointed
My Mom was a resident here for 2 years. Within the 2 years, many things about Desert View went downhill. The biggest issues were with the food and the staff. It seems that once the upper management changed, the corporation cut every corner they could to save money. The food became completely processed, cheap and packaged. Nothing homemade. The activities became boring, repetitive, and non-engaging. The staff became lazy and uncaring. The upper management are like car salesmen, they tell you what they think you want to hear even though it is not the truth. The building and resident rooms need updated badly. There are many other places in town that you can place a loved one ~ similar in price, cleaner, newer, nicer, more amenities ~ so why choose Desert View...

Thank you for your insight and opinion. As a Director here for 7 years, I can say that Desert View does not consider pre-packaged or processed foods as part of our dietary guidelines as they contain very high sodium content which is not suitable for senior residents as a majority face hypertension. The majority require no salt or low salt diets which is why meals are prepared homestyle and are supervised by a highly experienced Dietary Director with culinary commendations. In addition, a third-party Dietician overseas our menus and food products. 95% of all meals are homemade including desserts which are low or no sugar. Fresh vegetables may be an exception at times as Las Vegas hotels receive preference ahead of Assisted Living. Desert View is also recognized for maintaining one of the lowest staff turnovers in the country which is an issue across the board in communities these days. This includes 7 onsite Directors that have tenure between 7-25 years in our community. We did have a Director promoted 2 years ago unfortunately. There are many newer, shiny, lower cost communities to choose from. While we regret we didn't meet your expectations after 2 years as a resident here, Desert View continues to maintain 100% occupancy year after year as residents generally don't move. We strive for 100% satisfaction and I wish we could have resolved your concerns. Your input was appreciated.

Definitely recommended
I would definitely recommend Desert View Senior Living to others. Overall, it was a good experience. I would say the least of these was the food, but it wasn't horrible. The communication with the family was great, and they were always friendly to us and of course knew us by name. The move in process was easy. Another con would be the laundering situation. They lost some of dad's clothes and usually he was wearing someone else's, but it was a non issue for us. We would just recommend that they mark all the clothes well and maybe not bring expensive clothes there.

Thank you for the valuable feedback. Food and memory care laundry in a Memory Care unit has been a topic of conversation for the 15years I have represented communities. Desert View is no exception to the issue. It's so difficult to please so many tastebuds and special diets and we appreciate your input. It's interesting to note 50% eat everything, 30 Percent take certain medications that effect taste and flavor or must be on bland diets due to hypertension just do their best, and the other residents tend to like certain things and dislike others. A Dietician oversee the menus and nutrition. Everything is recommended to cook with little to no salt or sugar for diabetics. and high blood pressure. Laundry....you nailed it. No excuses. With 2 industrial machines, once washed and dried, they do their best to sort for each person. It's been an issue in every community I've been associated with. I recommend labeling with an indelible marker, all clothing and personal belongings by last name to help them sort clothing to make sure they end up in the right dresser. We appreciate you! Thanks!!

A Good Place for Loved Ones
Ask specific questions about what to bring and what NOT to bring based on the loved ones condition. NB: I am specifically answering about the Memory Care area of Desert View. What I really liked about the facility was: The friendliness, the outdoor garden area with grass, the activities for assisted living, spacious hallways, the "mail room" with a TV, books and puzzles and the location.

Thank you for the observation and helpful tip on ways we can elevate our communication to families prior to move-in. I realized the pre-move checklist needs improvement and have started to revise with more details to help families navigate the process more easily. Thank you for pointing this out. We continue to improve with the input from our family partners and agencies.

family expectations were definitely not met as they contributed to my Dad's Immeninet death...
My Dad had so many complaints: I don't think the facility had adequate staff to address his issues. He wasn't assisted properly. We paid [fee removed] just to get him in; also the monthly fee of over [fee removed] . Within one month he contracted COVID there and died on [date removed] alone. I haven't addressed it but I feel they should return the [fee removed] . He had to be tested for COVID prior to being accepted into the program and died one month and a day later by being exposed and contracted COVID!

Words can never bring back a loved one. Our sincere heartfelt condolences. COVID remains a threat in every community nationally. 2022 was the last year that required COVID testing before residing in a community. Licensed communities are mandated to report COVID and any infectious disease. Desert View, fighting this new unknown virus had one of the lowest number of fatalities in Las Vegas as the result of COVID. Staffing meets or exceeds the State guidelines, but it will never be enough aside from one-on -one care. Desert View maintains the State of Nevada "A" grading, the highest grade possible as we consistently maintain a 98% care and compliance standard exceeding the industry average of low 90's. 2022 was the last year that required COVID testing before residing in a community, a practice we hope remains in the past.

Desert View Senior Living and Uplift Hospice sets the high standard in Las Vegas. Everywhere else is a distant second. I placed a family member there in Dec 2023 after touring 10 facilities since 2016 in anticipation of ultimate placement once this person could no longer live by themselves. I knew the tangible and intangible factors I was seeking. My expectations were exceeded. As a career naval officer, I have a good sense for teams where winning is a habit, or in this context outstanding, compassionate care is the norm. Charlie, a man of action and sincerity made the transition seamless. Every single member from Mindy at the front desk to executives like [name removed], [name removed], the Maintenance Chief to all the wonderful medical technicians impressed me as total professionals. I feel especially qualified to give this review as my family member rapidly declined and I was there 1-2Xs/day for 2 months. I warmed by the care my mother and other residents received.

Would recommend
They are friendly but sometimes they want you to change things such as insurance and healthcare with what they want. Lots of workers but sometimes can't get the help you need I would recommend Desert View Senior Living to others.

Response from Desert View Senior Living

Thank you for submitting your review. I wish I could say we are perfect but there isn't a perfect community. Your input goes a long way into citing weaknesses that we can make strengths. For insurance and pharmacy, it's a courtesy to ask if a resident would consider using an in-house pharmacy or health care agency if the current provider is not responsive to requests from the Wellness Team as our expectations from outside agencies is very high. I do recommend keeping your current provider if you are comfortable retaining them as it's your privilege.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know Nevada’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Nevada’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

A Place for Mom has scored Desert View Senior Living 9.1 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
