I visited Terra Bella North Ridge as a spot for my wife while I wait for a spot to open at [community removed]. Terra Bella North Ridge is newer and looks better than [community removed], unfortunately, it is a 1 hr drive each way from my house in wake forest.

Review for TerraBella Durham

They have terrible management and no communication with family members! There is huge staff turnover and terrible communication at Terra Bella Durham. Upper management is not effective in many ways and staff quit because of how they run the place.

In Transition

TerraBella is going through a time of transition which impacted the experience. Laundry and cleaning were supposed to be done weekly, and was not done as promised. Many people in staff are new and seem understaffed. Staff is nice and help when sought out, but things that should just be done as part of service did not happen. Room size was good, food was probably average for assisted living. Seems to be a medium sized facility, which is nicer for helping new people settle in and become know. They have some good staff, they just seemed overworked/overwhelmed.

The room is large and mostly attractive. There is a nice porch with rocking chairs, although it overlooks the parking lot. Nursing staff was less than adequate. Medication was mismanaged at a crucial level. Some staff were very nice while others were extremely unprofessional. Possibly an OK place for somebody who is quite able-bodied and completely verbal and can request assistance. For those wheelchair bound or bed bound it's more difficult to get promised help. Food was terrible, disgusting looking often, not even easily identifiable, and sometimes my mom went without being fed.

This care unit was nicely appointed with a beautiful covered outdoor patio seating area for use in nice weather. The person giving the tour was very nice and answered all of my questions. She left a very positive impression. The activity room looked very clean and well cared for. The dining room was locked and closed because it’s only open during dining hours, but it appeared nice from the window.

The facility was wonderful. The deciding factor for us in particular was the distance to our home, and the ability for someone coming in to be able to keep up their physical well-being. The exercise area was only available if one needed Physical Therapy not if one wanted to maintain their physical abilities.

Happy with our choice

Activities are a little different from my Mom's last place. Instead of a few set things happening at set times during the day, they have an Activities room where something is always going on. I sat down there with my Mom yesterday with the activities person and two other women and we had a really fun time doing Christmas trivia (just as an example). I like this model a lot actually because it kind of encourages people to just hang out in a more casual way. It felt like a very welcoming place. I hear a lot of laughter throughout the day from the staff, and everybody seems to enjoy getting involved in holiday events, etc.

My mom is going to move here soon, so we don't have experience of living here yet. But I really liked my tour, enough so that I went ahead and signed up for the one available room. They were in the middle of "Spirit Week", and all the staff I met seemed to genuinely be caring and having fun. The dining room opens up to a lovely outdoor area, and there are other nice common areas available to the residents. I'm looking forward to having my Mom settled in.

TerraBella Durham

Case in point: when we moved [name removed] into the facility, he had an entirely new wardrobe. His wardrobe does not include multi-pocket or zippered pants, button-down shirts, or lace-up shoes. [name removed] is naturally exit-seeking, but our family observed that when he wears those types of clothing, his anxiety increases and his exit-seeking behaviors intensify. We explained this clearly to the Memory Care Director when [name removed] first moved into the facility. One evening, a staff member called to report that [name removed] was very anxious and insisting on leaving the facility. I asked, “What is he wearing?” I think the aide was surprised by the question, but she answered, “He’s wearing a pair of khakis.” I told her, “[name removed] doesn’t have khakis at Terrabella. He’s wearing someone else’s clothes — and that’s why he’s anxious and trying to leave.” They coaxed him into his pajamas, and shortly afterward, they called back to say he was a completely different person — calm, relaxed, and content, which is [name removed] usual demeanor. When the Memory Care Director, [name removed], learned about the incident, she immediately implemented a new evening policy for [name removed] and his roommate. The second-shift staff no longer lay out the residents’ clothes at bedtime in [name removed] room, because in the morning [name removed] would pick up his roommate’s clothes and put them on. It’s now the morning staff’s responsibility to take out the clothes for both residents and ensure each person dresses in their own outfit. Since this change, the problem has not happened again. We’re very appreciative that [name removed] retrained the staff and put a resolution in place so quickly. Her attentiveness and leadership made a real difference for [name removed] — and for our peace of mind as his family.

Your loved one still needs you

Recognizing limitations of staffing it is important to advocate and stay involved with your love one's care. My husband excessive weight loss, increase cognitive impairment and repeated falls. I had discussions of this concern with staff. Also staff failed to follow up with shift reports as staff were unaware of critical incidents occurring from one shift to another such as falls emergency room visits.

They do great considering the way we treat old folks in the country.

Dad hates the food. That's my only piece of info. I like the rec lady, but she's only one and the activities are mainly focused on non active folks. No outings. Whole system is bad unless you're able to pay 11k a month. The Addison does pretty good considering

Shaping up to be a great facility

The facilities are top notch - newly renovated, attractive. The staff is excellent; warm and friendly, they know patient by name and recognize family members. They are pretty responsive to needs and requests. I would like to see someone staffing the reception desk more frequently, and the monthly activities calendar needs to be in large print so residents can read it. But overall, one of the best facilities I've seen in the Triangle.

If I win the lottery I will move him

They have one care giver to 6 residents. Most in memory care really need much more attention My husband has falling 3 times and gotten 9 staples in his head and got a brain bleed I have the VA helping me with 20 hours a week one on one care that come into Addison Monday thur Friday 1pm to 5pm to make sure he doesn't fall. I really can't afford to put him in a more expensive facility and from what I hear under staff and under care everywhere is pretty common. For the most part, the older staff are more attentive, whereas the younger staff are on the phone and lazy. Also men are not attended to as fast or as often as the women. I just feel I have to spend more time at Addison to care for him myself. They tell me he refuses showers so they cannot make him shower however it's always the young staff that tell me this and Addison gives the residents different care givers every single day.

My mom was briefly a resident at The Addison. The staff seemed decent. Communication with the family was lacking. The move in process was okay (the maintenance guy was great). The staff did not seem very attentive to my loved one. Her room had old food in it. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend the facility to others.
