Fun place to be

My parents started living there four years ago going on five We have lost my father three years ago at 102. And he enjoyed the place so much being able to talk to everybody. Now my mom is there byherself at 100. I love the fact they keep my mother active in Bingo. Exercise classes every day. And friendship of people she walks with. Meals are fantastic. If I’m in a bad mood, I go to the Commons and I’m not in a bad mood anymore. I put smiles on faces and they put smiles on me.

Do not recommend

Regarding The Commons at Dallas Ranch, I met with a very nice lady. I believe her name was [name removed], or something close to that. The things that stand out to me from what she told me were that we could pick our own room—for example, the smaller one-bedroom or the larger one-bedroom. That cost was determined by the apartment itself, and then there were tiers after that, depending on the level of care that was needed. She told me that we would go over the tiers. My mom came in about a week or so later. We reached back out to let [name removed] know that we would be coming to The Commons, and between my sister and me, we started receiving calls from either two or three different people, via text and phone, who were very anxious to get things started with us. When my sister spoke with someone, she was told that [name removed] was no longer there and that we would be dealing with, I believe, [name removed]. I’m not sure. He was very unsure of any details, appeared very anxious, and was not very confident in anything that he told us. However, we did arrange to come in and go through the paperwork to basically sign a contract. Within a day or so of my sister returning his calls, we somehow—I don’t remember how—found out that he was no longer there either. Now we were dealing with a lady named [name removed]. It was all very awkward for us, but at that point, we had already put plans in motion for her to be discharged from her post-acute facility and into The Commons. We didn’t really have much time or any choices at that point, as she was being discharged and had to go somewhere. My sister finally was able to speak with [name removed], and we made an appointment and went in. At that point, we were told that we had already been assigned a one-bedroom apartment, which was the most expensive one they had. I explained that I had never picked an apartment because we had not gotten that far. She agreed to let my mom move into that apartment at the cost of the lower-priced one-bedroom. She also told us that as soon as there was something we were looking for—which was downstairs and a smaller one-bedroom—they would move us for free, and in the meantime, we would only pay the cost of the smaller one-bedroom. We literally moved my mom into almost the furthest second-story apartment they had. It was very nice; it was just so far back and not what we were hoping for. [name removed] also told us that there would be an ambassador group of people, so to speak, who would come by and check in with my mom. They would ask her if she wanted to come down and have dinner or lunch with them, or if she wanted to come down and play games. It was supposed to be a group of people who had been there for a while and were great ambassadors of The Commons who would encourage her, especially during the first few weeks. At that point, we were not given what tier she would be in, although I did ask numerous times. We moved her in on [date removed]. There was never, ever an ambassador of any sort who came to greet her, encourage her, invite her to a meal, or even talk to her. A few days later, the person I believe was a nurse who was in charge of my mom’s medications called me in and wanted to discuss her medications. At that point, that is when I was told what tier my mom would be in and the cost of that. Obviously, we were already there, and I didn’t even have a say in what she was receiving as far as care, other than I did know that she would have her medications given to her and that someone would be there while she showered. That was on a Tuesday. On Thursday, I found out that my mom had showered herself with no support. I went to the lady I was directed to for scheduling showers, and she apologized for not having my mom on her schedule. We arranged for someone to come that Thursday, and her regularly scheduled day would be Thursday late morning. Again, that Thursday, my mom showered herself. At this point, through no fault of The Commons, my mom had not left her room. She was choosing to have her meals delivered to her room and was literally going downhill on a daily basis. She was struggling because she would ask for pain medication, and it would take two to three hours before they would get it to her. This happened on numerous occasions, even in front of family members. The last two concerning things were when they brought up a vaginal cream for her. My mom was more than capable of using it herself, but she did ask the person to open the packaging. The person handed it to my mom and tried to explain to her how to use it. It actually was a nasal spray. Lastly, they woke her up in the middle of the night and gave her Tylenol, which she rarely uses. Because she was dead asleep, she woke up, took the medicine, and then said, “Why am I taking this?” They stated that she had called and asked for it. Okay, she did not ask for it. She doesn’t take Tylenol, and it actually had been intended for another patient. So, between all of those things, we moved her home on [date removed]. I was told that we could give a 30-day notice at any point. We did so that Friday; however, they have now charged us for the entire month of May. She was there for two weeks. It was nothing but chaos, miscommunication, no communication, and promises that were never kept. They have now sent us a bill for over $[removed]. So, would I ever recommend The Commons at Dallas Ranch? Absolutely not. In no way, shape, or form.

The Caring, Comfortable Commons

I wish my mom would have agreed to go sooner to enjoy all they had to offer. We were actually looking forward to having meals there with her, as we heard there is an excellent chef! Everyone was very kind, welcoming and caring. Her end of life care was excellent.

Dallas Commons

overall the facility is attractive, a great size- not too big or small, care givers seem nice and food is pretty good, however, I do think the management is a bit flakey. my mom has only been there just over a month and they have already fired the lead nurse and have told me the opposite information from when she first moved in on several important issues. communication could be better overall and the facility seems to have less activities then most I have toured which is fine for our needs but I'm surprised they do not coordinate more and encourage participation, and send out menus and activity calendars weekly.

Top Notch Care

My dad arrived here as a fall risk and a hospice patient. He had three previous falls in six months resulting in hip fractures. After moving to The Commons At Dallas Ranch, his appetite improved, he has built up strength, he participates in some activities, his new environment is clean and tidy. Lovely music is played in the dining areas and caregivers are always around and assessable. No codes are given to guests so security is well managed. My dad is thriving!

Improvements needed

Overall it was average. Admin was supportive, but staff were not the best. Some were very good, but many didn't care. The admin staff talked a good game and were very friendly, but then handed her to staff who didn't care. My mom's phone was stolen and no one cared or did anything. She passed within a week of that happening.

Home away from Home

My husband and I were in need of a place for my mom and loved The Commons on our first visit! [name removed]was absolutely wonderful on our tour. We decided to become a member of their community soon after. Sadly, my mom became ill and was not able to move in when expected. She entered under Comfort Care and spent her last days with the amazing care and comfort of everyone involved with her case. We only wished she could have moved in sooner to enjoy this amazing facility! We are so grateful to have made arrangements with The Commons, and we so enjoyed my mom’s short stay there.

Above and Beyond

I had multiple things happen to my parents at the same time which turned our family care plan upside down. Commons at Dallas Ranch worked quickly, within a matter of a few days, to help me get my dad placed in this facility. I found all the staff very compassionate, understanding, and willing to help me with my situation. They also put me at ease during a very emotional and stressful period of time. I would highly recommend Commons at Dallas Ranch be on your short list.

Review for The Commons at Dallas Ranch

They're very friendly and the facility is very clean and nice. It's been an overall great experience. I didn't understand when we first interviewed that none of their staff is licensed health professionals except maybe the Director. So that would be my only suggestion is making sure people know that it's only assisted living and that any skilled nursing care needs to be outsource

Our families experience

I would not recommend anyone to that facility. My mother d=fell 3 times, I paid for 8 visits from their CNA's but I did not get 8. I was with my mother more than once and after she pushed her button it took at least an hour to cone check on her never 8 visits. The medical nurse did not give my mother her antibiotics ordered by the emergency room doctor, I had to take her back to the hospital. On the weekends they only had 3 CNA workers to help over 100's of residence. After 13 days I took my mother out of there because they told me my mother did not hurt herself when she fell but I have pictures if injuries. They had good food and it was very clean

Just the facts

They are good, but not outstanding. Some staff are great and others are just there to get a paycheck. I would recommend considering the facility, but I would not tell anyone they should go there. The food is the best part of their service. The facility is oriented towards Assisted Living and not for invalid care. Hospice helps for some, but if your loved one is not very mobile, then careful consideration about this facility should be made.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know California’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about California’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
