Mom's Home
My Mother has been making her home at the Lodge at Old Trail for 4 years now. She enjoys having an outdoor balcony where she can bird watch and have her plants. My Mom has a cat and many of her neighbors have pets as well. The Lodge is lovely, and offers many events and programs for it's residents. The staff has always been very responsive to any concerns or suggestions we have had pertaining to Mom's well being. I truly believe that Mom's health and continued mental stability are a direct result of the team effort between the staff at the Lodge and our family.

Great Care
I am very pleased with the care thatwas given to me at this community. The room and the grounds are very nice and well kept. Alot of activities for me to choose from. The staff here is excellent and are always offering assistance for my needs. I am please with the food that is served. I feel that I am really getting great care for a good value. I would highly recommend this for other families that are needing good care for loved ones.

The Lodge is my wonderful new home
Living the good life is very close at The Lodge at Old Trail. It is located in a scenic small town in central Virginia, adjacent to a new housing/commercial/golf community. The building is pretty, decorated beautifully. Fine art decorates the walls. The halls are wide, the windows are oversized to let in maximum light, and the ceilings are tall. These things are important because living in a beautifully appointed building makes a difference in one's quality of life. New residents are welcomed with a series of 'hospitality dinners' where for three nights, residents sign up to have dinner with the newcomer, so at the end of the three nights you know fifteen people by name. It is a wonderful way to break the ice. My experience has been wonderful, and I see that my new neighbors are contented and happy, and that we all feel safe in The Lodge. I recommend it 100%

Kicked out with no where to go!
We had a great initial feeling of the Lodge. My mom moved into the Independent side and things were great while living independently. But when my mother's health declined and she needed to be moved to the Assisted Living side on a temporary basis, things went downhill. My mother was left in her room, with no communication and very little interaction. The nursing staff did very little for her the few times they entered her room. After a small stay in the hospital, my mom was basically told she wasn’t able to go back to the Lodge due to not having a permanent room available to her on the Assisted Living side. The family didn't receive any warning from the facility or the staff that she was being kicked out! So on a Friday afternoon we were scrambling to find her a new “home”! This was horrible for her, and very stressful for the family. The conversation between Judy, the Executive Director of the Lodge and the case manager during hospital discharge was embarrassing. Judy was rude, yelling, verbally demanding, and talking negatively about my mom/family. I have never witnessed something so embarrassing! It was at this time that it was brought to my attention that this wasn't the first time someone had been unexpectedly kicked out of the Lodge and treated so poorly. The Lodge has a great appearance and lots of appealing amenities. But the most important factor when looking for a new home should be the level of care your family member will receive. Please choose wisely when looking at the Lodge. We were lead to believe the 3 levels of care were available to us, and my mother's needs would be met. But don’t be fooled like we were. Looking back, being kicked out was a good thing, as the care she received when she moved out of the Lodge was much better and she began to improve. I truly hope by writing this review, it can help you to make a better choice than we did.

Response from The Lodge at Old Trail
July 13, 2015
Dear Daughter, The Lodge Family joins you in grieving the sudden and unexpected decline of your mother. Never in my 20 years of caring for seniors have I witnessed a resident change, in one week, from driving and entertaining friends with her witty sense of humor to requiring a secured memory care unit. Our goal at The Lodge is to ensure the health and safety of our residents at each level of care we provide: independent living, assisted living and memory care. To meet that goal we will advocate on behalf of our residents for more critical care in more appropriate settings (ie: nursing homes) in order to guarantee optimal care for their health and safety needs. To take your mother back into regular assisted living after her last hospitalization would have violated our Medical Director’s order and put your mother at risk. I hear and honor your anger and pain, and hope you will reach out to our Medical Director and your mother’s many Lodge friends to learn more about the loving care provided to her by the entire Lodge family. We loved your mother very much and will hold her close in our hearts forever. Warm regards, Judy Bowes, Executive Director

A gentler home.....
The staff is most courteous and helpful. The setting is very nice, as is the physical plant. People are friendly and helpful. It is in area with limited shopping and no big stores to shop in, with the exception of one pricey grocery. Many opportunities to enjoy cultural activity.

This would be my choice if I were moving into this area, because of Continuing care, and the OLLI program, but I have more family in Tennessee.

Didn't work out
Things didn't end up working out for my loved one here. I feel like they were not very thorough during the care assessment, as once he moved in to the community many of the issues that they said would not be a problem ended up causing him trouble. For example I feel like he was isolated in his room since they were not able to provide the degree of movement assistance that he needed. I also think that since he ended up being one of the more high maintenance residents he ended up receiving less attention from the nursing staff.

Off to a good start
In searching for memory care for my wife, who has late stage Alzheimer's disease, I visited five establishments in the Charlottesville area that were recommended by "A Place for Mom." All of the five were certainly more than acceptable, so part of my decision came down to the details of our particular situation. The other part was the atmosphere at The Lodge At Old Trail, which is friendly, relaxed, and unpretentious. My wife has been there for about ten days when I write this, and I am very pleased that she seems more relaxed than I've seen her for some time. At home, her sleep pattern was highly irregular and the daily routine of eating, bathing, toileting could be a test of wills. Much of this seems to have smoothed out at The Lodge, but, of course, I'm not as closely involved. She smiles more often than I've seen in a long time. Visiting her each day is a pleasant experience.

Not terrible but not great.
They could do better with medication management, and the ability to manage multiple medications. Their communication is not always accurate and timely, in responding to phone calls and emails. We liked that it was new and fresh. I feel like we got nickle and dimed for little things on the bill, like long distance and little things. The care we needed became overwhelming to them. They were having a difficult time.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Virginia regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Virginia regulations for Assisted Living.
