Assisted Living in Wisconsin

Overview of Assisted Living in Wisconsin

Wisconsin sits in the northern portion of the Midwest and is often referred to as “America’s Dairyland,” due to the large number of cows that call the state home. Besides having great cheese, Wisconsin is known as a northern oasis, with many lakes and streams throughout the state. Popular local pastimes include fishing, boating, hunting, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers. Whether you prefer spending time outdoors or enjoy living in a large city like Milwaukee, Wisconsin has got you covered. Currently, A Place for Mom partners with more than 440 senior living communities in Wisconsin that provide assisted living.

How much does assisted living cost in Wisconsin? The median monthly cost of assisted living in the state is about $4,500.

Assisted living requirements and regulations in Wisconsin

Assisted living communities are licensed through the Wisconsin Department of Health Services’ Division of Quality Assurance: Bureau of Assisted Living. Wisconsin recognizes three types of community settings for assisted living:[02]

  • Community-based residential facilities (CBRF) provide care and services to five or more seniors who do not need more than an intermediate level of nursing care.
  • Residential care apartment complexes (RCAC) offer an apartment to each resident and can provide up to 28 hours of assistance per week per resident.
  • Adult family homes (AFH) refer to a private residence where three or four seniors live together. They receive some care services, but not any nursing care. This type of care typically serves seniors with a physical or intellectual disability.

Wisconsin requires that assisted living facilities conduct a care assessment for all new residents. While the state doesn’t mandate a staff to resident ratio, they do say that communities should have enough staff available to meet the needs of its residents, with an awake caregiver available to any resident needing round-the-clock care.[02]

It’s also helpful to know that licensing and inspection reports of assisted living facilities in Wisconsin can be easily accessed by prospective residents and their families. We’ve outlined how to access such records in the section below.

Paying for assisted living in Wisconsin

Most adults will need some level of care as they get older, so it’s important to start planning to pay for that care well ahead of time. While many seniors pay for their assisted living care using personal savings, others can utilize federal- and state-funded programs. These include Medicaid, Medicare, and any applicable veterans benefits. Most families use a combination of payment methods.

There are a number of ways to privately fund assisted living in Alaska, from using long-term care insurance to taking advantage of home equity.
