Things to know

I wasn’t ready for senior living, as I am still very independent, so that may have influenced some of my experience. That said, I found the residents to be very friendly and welcoming. Dining Dining was one of my biggest concerns. There were frequent issues with meal times and long waits to be served. The dining room was often cold, and some of the food was served very hot while desserts were extremely sweet. Soup was only offered at lunch, and the alternate menu was rarely expanded beyond the same few choices, such as a baked potato or soup. There were no small-serving options, no gluten-free choices that I could find, and no self-serve coffee available. There also didn’t seem to be a way to choose a one- or two-meal-a-day plan, which would have been helpful for residents who don't eat three meals in the dining room. Breakfast felt too early, lunch too late, and dinner early as well. There was also quite a bit of wasted food. A weekly menu printed on the back of the monthly calendar would have been helpful so residents could know what meals were coming up. Even simple things, like having butter available on the table, seemed to be overlooked. One bright spot was [name removed] lunch, which I generally enjoyed. Administration My biggest disappointment was that residents' concerns did not always seem to be heard. Administration did not attend some of the resident meetings where concerns were being raised, which made it difficult to feel that feedback was being taken seriously. Apartments & Facilities The apartment size was adequate for my needs, although the kitchen sink was extremely small. The balcony, however, was a great feature and one of my favorite things about the apartment. Cleaning was satisfactory. The Wi-Fi was weak toward the ends of the building, which could be frustrating. Other Observations I felt the holiday decorations were a bit overdone. Christmas music being piped through the hallways was also not something I particularly appreciated. Residents have different tastes, beliefs, and preferences, so I think common areas should be approached with that diversity in mind. Overall, I think the experience may be similar to other senior-living communities aimed at a similar population. I have visited several and lived in two, and affordability is a significant concern for me. I believe there are good people and positive aspects here, but there are also areas where listening to residents and improving dining options and communication could make a meaningful difference.

Amazing place for mom!

Overall, I'm happy that my mom is here because she needs the safety, security, regular meals, and medication management that the community provides. The staff has been very pleasant, and Nurse [name removed] has been especially wonderful. My mom also enjoys the food, her room is amazing, and the location is perfect. The art activities and events are nice as well. My biggest hesitation is that my mom doesn't love living there. She often feels like she's in a prison, and I wish residents had more opportunities to spend time in their own rooms and away from some of the chaos. My mom isn't as advanced as many of the other residents, and I worry that the environment isn't helping her emotionally. I also wish there was more encouragement and assistance with bathing. It seems like she's only bathing about once a week, and I feel she could benefit from more support in that area. Even with these concerns, I'm grateful she's receiving the care she needs. I'm hopeful that with more time she'll begin to embrace it and settle in, although I also recognize that some of her feelings may simply be part of the progression of her disease.

Unaffordable for many people

1. I cannot afford any of these places. Even w long term care insurance because you are charged for the services. 2. It was welcoming, consistently by the residents Staff was more welcoming before you signed on. Then they moved on to new potential customers. 3. Meal plans and food was pretty negative. Not much catering to dietary needs like sweet and gluten, not enough on alternate menu No flexibility in cost if you eat only one meal a day. Also breakfast too early. Lunch is late and dinner too early 4. The resident committee was a great group of people with a lifetime of experience and they were pretty much ignored. I took notes for their meetings. Lots of dining issues and outdoor parking and lighting concerns. 5. It was difficult to get in to talk to [Name Removed]. I never did. She called and did not seem to know what I wanted in spite of writing to her. She eventually replied to my emails. 6. I am not ready for this type of living entertainment etc. Not my thing.

The rooms are very small - like a small hotel room and I don't think they will suit our needs. Memory care seemed very nice, but again with very small rooms. The independent living area gives the facility a sense of activity - not sure if assisted living or memory care provide a similar level of social activity.

Welcoming Anchor Bay

Such a difference after Capitol Ridge which was not a good match. This does not feel like a hospital and the function rooms are more modest. The grounds are beautiful. Plus the price, although still almost beyond my means, is more reasonable. Not as top heavy with managers. I do wish the meal times were different. 8. 12 and 5:30. And coffee for self service near lobby should return. I will ask that the piano in memory care be tuned. I would play it if it were and wouldn't mind an audience. Music is so important to memory care. The main lobby piano is fine but very public.

Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Rhode Island’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
