My wife and I visited Brighton Gardens at Wheaton on [date removed]. We were toured at the facility by the representative from Brighton. We were shown 1) A Studio and a 2) One bedroom unit. The sample units were arranged neatly to illustrate the size and practical nature of the units. We were impressed especially those with a nice outside view. We also toured the other parts of the building, i.e., restaurant, offices, special function location, lawn and outside features. The Brighton representative inquired about our immediate and future retirement plans. We indicated that we are on the planning and investigative phase and that Brighton was the first place that we visited. We indicated how pleased we were with the features and so we went thru with some of the financial aspects. Of course, we indicated that we have to double check the financial items and possibly get back later on. We plan to visit other places for comparative purposes.

I took my friend there about two weeks ago, and when we walked in staff was in the process of celebrating “wacky hair, weak“… It was so heartwarming to see the staff having fun while working at a very difficult environment… I was impressed with the cleanliness of the building, the shadowbox outside of each door was a thoughtful idea for the residence, there were people sitting outside on the benches, enjoying the good daddy weather, I like the idea of the gardens available to the residence, but it was too hot that day. We did not go out and actually see them, and [name removed] was a very gracious host and tour guide… Out of the six that I took my friend too, Brighton Gardens was my first choice… My friend has chosen another place though.

Billing was difficult for awhile but now they have a 800 number to get in touch with a live person. Activities are fun, creative, stimulating. Hard to get call back from head of nursing. Nurses on the floor are responsive.

Our Road to home experience

The start date changed by a week and they were accommodating but they created 2 billing accounts so I could not easily use the app nor auto pay with duplicate billing's. They'd email me an invoice for 1 amount and mail me something different. The apartment size was plenty. Crafts were cute fun activity. My biggest disappointment was that she was there to get back on her feet, a road to home after rehab stay, to be with professionals for safety while building strength with PT/OT. It was hard to get people to not rely solely on diapers and wheel chairs. They did a good job trying to make sure she sat upright after eating to digest. They did a great job changing the diapers and wiping her up. No issues with medicine mgmt. They encouraged inclusion in activities and dining.

Most of the staff are very helpful in the daily care of my sister and our main goal is to continue her regular physical, occupational and speech therapies which are all done in house so no outside trips are needed!

Food needs improvement and management

Well kept and functional for the residents. Appropriately priced and always clean and smells fresh. The 1.5 it lacks to get a 5 rate is due to the sub-pair food serve and quality. Overall the staff is supportive and accommodating...

One step at a time

Staff is friendly from what little I'm there so I can't say much else about that. Room size is adequate. When you go from a 2400sq ft home to a 433 sq one bed room apt. that is quite a shock but it is doable. The studios were just too small to spend the rest of your life in. lots of miscommunication on medication management. Not even allowed to have things like Tums in her room or her rescue inhaler. Was not told that on intake

Overall pleased

Staff are competent, very caring and friendly. When my mom went into Hospice however, the staff seemed to be unaware or to to have difficulty adjusting to the shift in rules to accommodate pain relief. 2) On the first days, we were told the dining room would be given our names to join our mom at dinner. There was no greeting/ guidance and once we found a table it took an hour and a half for us to get dinner. 2nd evening was somewhat better as a server explained they were short staffed. 3)care leaders were hard to reach. Always had to leave v-mail, didn't always get response, turns out they were transitioning personnel. Bottom line I would not move in around the holidays. I was told it was a good time because of events etc. It was not. Fortunately things improved and the outstanding receptionist got us through the scary first days. The day to day care was good and all involved truly have there heart in the right place and provide service with cheerful hearts.

Review for Brighton Gardens of Wheaton

Please understand I am not a resident of Brighton. I go there twice daily to feed my wife who has been in memory care for a year and 9 months. Overall, the memory care staff is outstanding (5). The only weakness in memory care has been the manager as there has been three in the 21 months my wife has been there. The first manager was excellent, the second one unsatisfactory, and the third one has been on the job a month. First impression is quite good. Housekeeping is very good and her private room is well kept. Since her foods are all puréed, it would be unfair to give a food score. It seems balanced from a nutritional standpoint. The activity schedule is quite good and varied. My biggest complement I have is the outstanding COMPASSIONATE care my wife gets from the memory care ladies. It means the world to me. From a value standpoint, Brighton Gardens is overpriced. My monthly bill is $[removed]. Thankful I have an excellent long term care policy.

I would recommend the care givers and staff were very good. The cable was not ready when she admitted and they had 2 billing accounts because she discharged from prev facility a week later than expected. Like all communities or facilities they tend to lean toward the wheel chair vs the walker for those not as stable but they made sure she sat upright after each meal to digest and encouraged activities, crafts.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know Illinois’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Illinois’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
