Brookdale Ann Arbor experience
I would not recommend memory care at Brookdale. The cost didn't match the care. My Dad would lay in bed for days, not encouraged to eat or drink. I found him laying on a bare mattress twice, plenty of bedding was provided. He would go days without a shower, he would decline because it was done in the evening when he most fatigued. I was told they couldn't force him to eat, drink or shower. Isn't that what memory care is??? To encourage these tasks and just do it? He ended up in the hospital for a week due to dehydration. Needless to say, he did not return to Brookdale. The lights were left on during the night while he was sleeping, my goodness, it's common courtesy to shut off lights when someone is sleeping. We had a camera in the room, it was awful at times. These things were pointed out to the administration staff, continued to happen anyway.

Great Community at Brookdale Ann Arbor
Administrative staff were very friendly with excellent communication to both residents and family. Nursing staff were knowledgeable and responsive to questions and concerns. Aides were attentive and kind. Dad felt that they truly cared about him. They made time to talk with him and develop true relationships. They gave him the opportunity to participate in his care as much as he was physically able rather than rushing through and "throwing him around" as he'd experienced in other facilities. Staff were responsive to requests to clean up Dad's room more often as he become less able to clean up after himself. The activities staff found ways to include even the residents that were limited in what they could participate in physically or mentally. The building had multiple areas for various activities and common areas for residents to hang out and visit with others. The dining room combined elegant and cozy and had the feel of a real restaurant. The building is in a convenient central location in Ann Arbor relatively close to the highway. The parking was often tight and required using the staff parking lot behind the building.

A Son's Impressions.
Staff is very nice. I ate lunch there and the food was okay, but not great. My mother's bathroom could have been cleaned better. I have only been there three times, so I don't have a lot of personal reference. I live 3 1/2 hours away. My brother, Tom, lives about 20 minutes away and would have better over all insight. The building appears well maintained. A window in Mom's room wasn't closing and I mentioned it to a couple of the caregivers as well as the front desk. Security seems decent. It is very expensive, so I would hope that things are good quality. Mom is memory challenged and sometimes is okay with the place, and sometimes not as happy. Over all the place is good.

Review for Brookdale Ann Arbor
Overall, very pleased - 5/5. The residents seem genuinely happy, and several have shared positive comments with me directly. One resident, who is still quite lucid, told me, "I hate having to be in a place like this-but if you have to be somewhere like this, this is a really good place." The staff are kind, responsive, and helpful, and the food is excellent. You can truly taste the care and effort the chef puts into every meal. The main downside has been a lack of transparency regarding the costs. We ended up paying significantly more than what was initially quoted, which has been frustrating. I strongly recommend that others review the contract carefully-word for word-and be mindful of how certain fees are worded, as some charges were not clearly communicated upfront.

Review for Brookdale Ann Arbor
The staff are wonderful, everyone is very friendly, kind, competent and caring. The director, head nurse and sales manager all have bent over backward to help make my dad's transition to life in assisted living smooth and helped us with any bumps on the road. My dad says the aides "genuinely care about me" and take the time to talk and joke with him and help him move at the pace his condition allows. He was in many rehab facilities before this, and he really appreciates the slower, more personal and less stressed pace. I appreciate that the facility is small enough to feel intimate, like a family setting, after he was in many larger institutions. His room is like a mini apartment with a sleeping, living, and kitchenette area along with a spacious bathroom. He has a corner room with three large windows letting in light and allowing him to watch the wildlife that move through. It doesn't feel at all like the hospital type rooms he's had before in rehab. We have been happy with the therapy services Brookdale has contracted as well as the care he has received from the aides, visiting doctors, and nurses. The activities director always asks if my dad wants to participate, but respects his decision if he declines. They have a variety of activities available for all abilities. The only areas we haven't been as impressed are in the level of housekeeping for his room and the food. I often end up cleaning up messes in his room though the week, since housekeeping is only done weekly. The food is simple and often prepackaged. My dad enjoys eating it, but I saw better quality food at some of his rehab facilities. Overall, though, the personal attention, kindness and care he and our family have received far outweighs any down side. I would highly recommend Brookdale Ann Arbor to anyone looking for a home away from home for their older loved one

A loving and skilled community
Last August, I utilized a Brookdale tool to help me prioritize my needs for the ideal residential memory care for my 72 year old husband. I chose Brookdale Ann Arbor because I could tell the staff enjoyed working with individuals with memory loss. I was impressed to learn how many staff had worked at this facility for over a decade; some close to 2 decades. When there was a winter power outage covering a large area, I was pleased with updates from [name removed], our executive director, regarding the need for additional generators and be assured of the safety and comfort of our loved one. As a nurse of 40 years, I appreciate how each individual resident is loved physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. Having a community with other families and staff has made this potentially difficult journey a joy! I especially love the music and social programs which include the entire family.

Our Experience
My loved one was previously a resident at Brookdale Ann Arbor. The cleanliness is very good and seems important to them, along with how things look. They are overly friendly, to the point that lacks sincerity. Meds are not distributed on a schedule and no response to inquiries of documentation of care. The marketing person is truly a sales person and over promised to pull us in. The food was good and my loved one liked the desserts. They lacked participation encouragement for the activities for the residents. As for the Value for Cost, paying for the location not the care. It's just too much money.

That most staff are friendly, professional, and seem caring but at least one has been consistently harsh and disrespectful to our family member. Response to resident requests from assistance is inconsistent, sometimes timely, sometimes very delayed. Our family member liked its appearance and the location, she can get transportation to her physicians.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know Michigan’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Michigan’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

A Place for Mom has scored Brookdale Ann Arbor 9.1 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.   We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.   Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
