Brookdale Elizabeth City

I don't have anything good to say about the Elizabeth City place, except that the workers were excellent. Other than that, I'm sorry I went there. Five days into her stay they demanded 24/7 care for her at $[removed]/hr. She was living by herself five days prior. So many red flags it looks like a parade. Elizabeth City Brookdale sent me a bill for approximately $[removed]. I knew the bill for the caregiver was coming. I called several times trying to find out when that bill was arriving. Nobody knew. Then, instead of pulling out the above $[removed], they took $[removed] more. No notice. The finance person thought the contract caregiver company had done it. She had done it and didn't know it. Elizabeth City took a 89 year old woman, and instead of integrating her into the community, they threw her to the wolves. Everyone needs training in a new environment.

Our experience

When I looked at Brookdale for my husband, [name removed], one of the things that really impressed me was the cleanliness of the facility. It was quite quite clean and that was very impressive to me. I am a retired registered nurse, and so that was important. the staff was very nice. I did feel like There weren't enough people taking care of the ones like my husband who had dementia and was very needy. He had his meals in his room. I think we ate once in the dining area. He was just very ill. He was only there for a little over three weeks before he passed away. And, the people that work there were very kind to him and respectful. I stayed with him during the day and as he got worse, I had a person come in from out side to be with him during the night and everything I felt was clean. I just wish that there were more people caring for the people that were as sick as he was I know that they were busy and so that's why I had someone come in at night and then I stayed with him during the day. Everyone that worked there that I dealt with was very nice and polite and seemed to be caring for the patients.

Wonderful Day staff, not night

Day time staff is great! Nighttime is not good. At lunch, the food is almost the same all the time horrible beef in gravy. Desserts are very good . The memory care residents need more things to do, they are left to themselves too much of the time. I think they need more staff. The day staff is wonderful but just over worked.

Our Experience

My mother is currently a resident at Brookdale Elizabeth City. My biggest issue is with communication. Several things are prompting me to remove my mother from there in the next few weeks. I would recommend this facility to others if the resident didn't have any major health issues.

Excellent Community and Welcome!

My dad recently moved into this community and from the moment I first spoke to someone through his move-in, the communication was fantastic! Every question answered and Dad received truly a red-carpet welcome.

Staff very friendly, answered all questions, facilities - beautiful, very clean. The Mediterranean meal - superbly delicious and healthy. Served attractively and graciously, very interesting and informative describing healthy food choices for a Mediterranean diet. Promptly greeted us on time to begin the tour. [unreadable] range for the majority of persons is too much in this great community.

My sister-in-law feels safe and well cared for by the staff at Brookdale. They are kind and responsive to her needs. She enjoys the food - which is quite remarkable! The chef is remarkable too - very flavorful meals and much variety. The community has recently undergone a renovation and the place is just lovely. Thank you Brookdale!

Brookdale is a wonderful home; the staff is friendly, helpful and very kind. My sister (only 63) lives there and is happy for the first time. She has previously been a resident at 3 other facilities. We found Brookdale and fell in love with everything about it. The food is exceptional, housekeeping as well. Thank you for providing a pleasant home for my little sister.

This community is fabulous! All so caring! All senior staff are great. [Name removed] sales manager/[name removed] director [name removed] head of health wellness, [name removed] finance all will get answers to your questions. My mom lived with me for 13 years and had a heart attach at 91 and needed care beyond my ability. This was an answer to a prayer she is very happy and so am I.

Outstanding staff, enjoy visiting because of staff personally. I am impressed at how they all step up to cover other positions so that my mother is not left waiting for assistance. I like and feel liked by each staff member. I have definitely recommended this facility to others.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know North Carolina’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about North Carolina’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
