A place we feel good about

Overall experience- 5 Cleanliness- 5 the facility is clean and has a homey feel. It doesn't feel like an institution; more like a nice hotel. Friendliness- 5 Quality of care - 5 the staff seems to care about individuals and will make adjustments in the schedule as needed. For example, trying again later if the resident isn't cooperative with taking meds right this moment. Administrative staff - 5 Responses to our inquiries have been timely. We so far haven't felt like we were a "bother". We've also not felt like we were promised one thing but dealt something else. Food - Don't know. We haven't been visiting at mealtimes but we also haven't heard any complaints. Activities - 5 there are many offered and promoted. Value for money - 5 We feel that the cost of memory care in general is obscenely expensive. That being said, we also feel like Brookdale is providing thorough care in return.

Our family's experience

My rating would be 3. My reason is that I felt they are understaffed and they can't possibly assist all the residents as they need. My mom was bedridden so she needed special care actually, much more than most of the residents there, that is why I decided to bring her home and care for her there as hard as it was. I am so glad I did. As for the food and cleanliness, the food was okay, not 5 star but they did the best they could to accommodate my mother with her special needs. The cleanliness of the building was very nice, smelled clean. The only comment I would like to make is that the carpets in the room really did need some cleaning. Some of the window screens in the rooms might need to be replaced. Other than that, the staff was pleasant and helpful and my mother mentioned that to me a few times. I did appreciate the help they did provide to my mother.

Feels like Home With Friendly Staff

The value for cost is a 4 but then there isn't any facility that is affordable really and then IF it was affordable then the rest of the care would probably be bad. My dad loves the food (and he was a cook in the air force and always has loved to cook) it took him a couple months to settle in but now he calls it home and the staff have been wonderful and understanding. The administrative staff have always answered all my questions. As of now we are very happy with Brookdale

Our family's experience

They were always understaffed. Meals were ok, I couldn't say good. They did have some coloring after dinner that some residents participated in. Our family member was sent to the ER the first 2 mornings she was there, her behavior was what we had told them it would be. We were informed that if we initiated hospice that wouldn't need to happen again so that's what we did and it was best. Prevention measures for pressure wounds were repeatedly not taken. The nursing staff was good in the last week of life.

Brookdale Geary Street

Many staff overworked because there aren't enough. When they quit, get sick, get hours reduced for pay reasons, etc, it's very hard on the ones left. Too much going to top level executives, not much consideration for who it is affecting. Very little training in kitchen workers. Not good nutrition usually for the elderly. Sorry for negative comments...our move has been good in many ways also. Love the people and social life ie talking to others!

Do no place your loved one in the Memory Care unit.

If you have other options, do not placed your loved one within the Memory Care unit. We removed my father as soon as possible after he experienced a drastic change in condition days after being admitted. Brookdale could not provide the staffing levels to provide him the care he needed. He was not bathed or groomed and my family had to step in and provide 24/7 1:1 care for him until we informed the Long-Term Care Ombudsman and got licensing involved. This facility cannot provide a safe level of staffing or the bare minimum support for ADLs required by the state. If this is your only option, you must consistently be an advocate for your loved one. Get every decision from them in writing, including changes in care plan. You should receive advance notice of this change in care plan. We did not. Involve the Long-Term Care Ombudsman if they are causing harm and placing your loved one at risk.

Caring staff and overall would recommend

Mom was in Memory Care, therefore I can only address this area. 1. 5 2. 3-4 depending on staff 3. 5 of course I was friendly with them, instead of adversarial. The staff genuinely cared for and liked mom. They thought she had quite a personality. 4. 4-5 depending on staffing. As a retired RN and NP I worked with the nursing and support staff to help them meet mom's needs. 5. 3-4 Administrative staff in the facility was helpful and addressed concerns. However, it was corporate that dictated staffing which was not always adequate. Food was just okay but when able, she enjoyed going to the dinning room for meals. 7. Mom really didn't participate in activities. 8. Hard to say. The team was willing to work with me on the nursing care portion of the fees and we did get a monthly discount when she moved in. We also received a refund of the rest of the month when she died on the [date removed].

Looks better than it is

When we walked on to tour the memory care facility at Brookdale Geary Street it looked lovely, the residents seemed happy and it felt great. The next 2 mornings after moving mom in were spent in the ER, the second day no one notified us for 3 hours!! Within a short time of moving mom in we realized that the staffing was minimal and that she would not be receiving a pendant that would allow her to call if she needed help. There was a short pull string but their solution to making it long enough for her to reach in bed was trash bags tied to it to a trash bag. When the cord was pulled in error it took over 15 minutes for someone to arrive. Meals were unimpressive. One was a sandwich and huge leaves of boiled cabbage. We quickly pivoted to hospice which was better than depending on facility staff. At the end of her life they were more present and compassionate, one of the nursing staff was with her often. All in all, I would NOT use them again under almost any circumstances.

"If you care for your loved one...."

Brookdale looks nice on the outside, but your loved one won't be taken care of! My Mom was just left in the bed all day with no bathroom or food helper except a diaper on! The only good thing was my Mom's nurse. Terrible place.

I would not recommend this place

My mother had issues with her roommate that they chose not to resolve, which led to continuous problems. She had things come up missing, among other things, they just didn't care. I would have never placed my mom there had I have known. Please check the report on their license, it will tell you everything you should know about this facility.

Do not trust this place

My mother recently passed away at Brookdale on Geary in the memory care facility. We made several visits and each time the level of cleanliness was below acceptable. Many times staff was not to be found for more than 10 minutes to speak with or open the door for family to exit (they were taking a smoke break - all together). She was left for who knows how long without care and attention during her last days. It was hard to be close to her. Upon her death, staff went through everything and took anything of value. When I say everything, I mean everything. Her suitcases were unpacked and things taken and then replaced with another resident's dirty laundry. All the pockets of her clothing were turned inside out. Her purse had nothing but ID and phone book. All her crackers, tissues, watch and who knows what else, were emptied out and the purse packed in a suitcases of linens that were bought for her but never used. Most items ever bough new for her while she was a resident disappeared.

Do not suggest

Not satisfied at all. Good nurses were treated badly and fired. Kept nurse that used to work at penitentiary and did not treat patient as older persons should be. They needed chef, housekeeping, and maintenance personnel. He was admitted to hospital and Brookdale refused to have him back! I have addressed these concerns with director when we moved his things out. Couldn't even provide a dolly to move big furniture!

Nice place overall but outrageous charges and hidden fees.

We liked the staff and the way our relative was treated. It's one of the best places I've seen, and I've been in many. The charges and hidden fees were outrageous - way past [removed]k per month even with Hospice care. Our daughter had a bad experience with promises made and then rejection of a relative, so circumstances matter.

We toured Brookdale Geary Street during our search for Assisted Living for our loved one. This facility was great! All really nice folks. We were very excited about how close to home it was, also. But my loved one needed more care than they could provide, so we continued our search.

Very disappointed

To say we are disappointed in this place would be an understatement. My mother-in-law moved in there in [date removed]. The food is terrible, but the care she receives is even worse. She is an insulin-dependent diabetic and she has to hunt the caregivers down to check her blood sugar and give her insulin. They have been confined to their rooms lately due to covid and several times, her food has not been brought to her. On [date removed] they raised her rates $1,119 per month. Yet their care has gotten worse. The housekeepers don't show up half the time. Her bed hasn't been changed in 3 weeks. Luckily, we are moving her out, but I'm very concerned for the people there that don't have the opportunity to leave or have someone to be their voice. If you love your person, do not let them live here.
