Review for Northstar Square
The staff members have worked there for years. I find that to be very comforting. They are extremely attentive and caring towards mom. She is in a studio apartment, which I find to be quite spacious. Her apartment is kept clean and her laundry is done regularly. Unfortunately, mom is no longer able to eat solid food, but when she was able to, she never complained.

The staff are such sweethearts. They seem to care about the clients, and they do meet the clients needs. The supervisors, directors etc again very kind, compassionate and do their job well. The layout of the building is easy and accessible. The rooms themselves are a good size as are the bathrooms. The dining room is lovely. Its a small community maybe 50 people total. The grounds are kept well. Front porch seating is a favorite place for residents. For a small community the boxes are checked and it feels safe. These are the positives ans there are many. Unfortunately the negatives are very negative. The owners of Northstar are based in Raleigh, NC and it seems to me they dont get to GA or this facility much or if they do, its got to be men..because the building looks like it could use a genuine reno. Carpets everywhere all hallways common areas etc..they look original or close to it. They are smelly, stained, and ripped in places..they need to pull up and replace but in common areas it ahould be flooring not carpet. The furniture is the saddest. It needs to go to the dumpster not even good will. It looks like it came out of goodwill dumpsters. Its just awful..I dont know why they cant replace it im sure with all the furniture stores here someone would donate or at leaat discount. Its sad. All the rooms need a designer to refresh the rooms. Everything ia probably original , bathrooms, kitchenettes, shelving, it juat shotty and dark!! If the corporate office visited and really looked at it, they could see its falling apart and they could spend very little making it better. Second complaint is related to the food apparently, I have no direct experience with this but I have heard the food is crap. Small portions and whoever the cook is, they are just that a cook, not trained, not a chef and the product they are using ia pretty cheap, like bottom shelf reject pile of a grocery store. Come on they could do better. If I were to move my mother out it would be for this reason. Apparently the portions are super super small, and the quality is so poor that she ends up not eating. This for us was a major concern for placing her in AL. If I could and didnt have a career, I would become the head chef. Cooking is love language what language they are speaking I do not know. It is safe, and mostly clean, great location. Great employees Needs help esthetically for sure and major improvement in the meals and kitchen. They also need a real bus not minivan that takes the residents out, twice a week to lunches, shopping, etc. And they do need more entertainment not corny kiddie games. Real entertainment. I like Northstar but it needs work.

I can only comment on the initial application process but not much more because my Dad was only there one night and they had to call 911 for him because he was having difficulty breathing. He ended up in hospital with pneumonia and heart failure and then went to hospice where he passed away. I was however happy with the application process and the tour, move in etc. it is a smaller facility so I felt it would be a good fit for my dad as his mobility was a problem. The nurse was very good, answered all my questions and went all the way to the rehab facility to assess him (which was all the way downtown). I visited them early on during my search and got a good homey feeling. They don't have all the amenities that some of the other places have like multiple dining rooms, gym, theater etc. but for my dad's particular circumstances I think it would have been a good fit. It definitely felt like a family environment and the staff were all great and seemed like they were very happy working there. They were very flexible with the move in and they were also very supportive to me as his caregiver. I am sorry he didn't get to live there.

Smaller than some of the other places I toured but very warm and inviting. The staff are very knowledgable and friendly and seemed like they really enjoyed working there. The residents seemed happy and it is more affordable than a lot of the other larger places I looked at. I like that it is an "age in place" and I think my father would be very comfortable there.

The atmosphere has a home feel. The facility has always been clean each time I have popped in to visit my mom. Everyone of the staff members that I have encountered have been very friendly, and are there to answer any questions. [Name Removed] , the activity director always has a smile. You can tell she loves her job. The ladies that I know that care for my mom are kind and friendly([Names Removed]). I love that my mom has daily options ( like a menu ) of food choices . The dining room reminds me of small restaurants in hotels. My mom's room is a great size .

Positive: the activities director and nurse are very kind and have been very helpful when I have any questions or concerns Negative: the administrative staff seem to be unorganized frequently so paperwork gets lost or not properly filled out

I thought the staff was much better than community name removed]. While at there , [name removed] developed constant hematomas in her arms, which I believe were caused by rough handling and her skin so frail. The food was not good either. Northstar has a wonderful staff who took care of name removed] a lot better. She never got any hematomas in her arms. She liked the food better and her caregivers actually cared about her as a person, not as a number. If I had to have anyone in a home again, I would choose Northstar.

It's a nice community! Everyone is friendly and caring and they are good about communicating issues. My mom really enjoys the activities especially special events. I wish the pricing was lower and that they offered off site activities. My mom has lived at several assisted living communities in metro Atlanta and this one is the best!

I couldn't be more pleased with the care my mother receives at Northstar Square. The CNA's are loving, caring and capable and always go the extra mile to meet her needs. The LPN on staff is also more than willing to do whatever it takes to care for Mother. We have a wonderful activities director who brightens the lives of all the residents. The lady in charge of food services provides delicious food, along with a loving and cheerful attitude. All the staff goes above and beyond to provide a nourishing environment for every resident. We truly feel like family here! I would highly recommended Northstar Square to anyone looking for a home for their loved one.

We're no longer at Northstar. Several factors led to our departure: change in management, personnel turnover, lack of activities, and price increase in 2024. I think their staff is doing the best they can but aren't trained to a high standard and are under paid. The facility layout is not conducive to outside activities, or guest ease of access to the facility. Senior executive position was unfilled for an extended duration so no one was available to discuss issues or execute changes.

I would say that they are very friendly. But the care is not what I expected it to be and it's because I believe they are understaffed. They have gone through new ownership, but they've had enough time to work out the kinks. The meals seem to be one of the biggest complaints by the residence especially my mother. When I look at the menu items, it's the same thing all the time. Chicken, ham and cheese sandwiches, a salad, some cake, chicken, ham and cheese sandwiches a salad some cake. I've never really seen other things like pizza or spaghetti. I've never seen things like hotdogs and coleslaw or hamburgers and french fries. I've never seen things like cut up fresh fruit. But the staff is very friendly

From the tour experience to everyday living, my mom gets her needs met. The staff truly do care for their residents like family. I see it first hand every time I visit. My mom's health and wellbeing has improved since she had been in the community. She likes to interact with the other residents and really loves the food! I recommend!

Our family had an in person tour with Northstar Square and we knew that it was not going to be the place for our loved one, the community was old and dirty.

All of them are 5's I was very pleased with this facility. I wish I would have found it earlier. When I interviewed with the director he had a representative from each department stop by to say hello and tell me about their department and their role. All staff I encountered seemed to genuinely care about the patients.

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:
Know Georgia’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Georgia’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.
Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.
Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
