The Clare is excellent
My husband and I moved to The Clare almost four years ago. It was a very good decision! The apartments are well equipped and very comfortable. The staff is well chosen and helpful in every way. We have been particularly pleased with the dining service. The chef offers a nice variety each week and the food is well prepared. The location is excellent and transportation is available for medical appointments and many activities. We enjoy a wide variety of programs each week. Residents, as well as staff, provide ideas for the programs and outings to theaters, museum exhibits and special events.

A great place to live
I've lived at the Clare for over 13 years, having moved in with my husband who was diagnosed with Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy. He was able to stay with me in Independent Living for 15 months before transferring to Skilled Nursing where he remained until his death 17 months later. The care he received was all I could have wished for him. I continue to reside in Independent Living, surrounded by new friends I've made and a fabulous staff that handles all my needs: housekeeping, transportation, food, entertainment. I've done many trips all over the world with people I've met here, having just returned from a cruise that went from Australia to Singapore, with a stop in Bali. The facility is well run and the Executive Director is exceptional. The location is the best available if you appreciate living in the middle of a vibrant city. No regrets for making this decision and would (and do) recommend to anyone contemplating a move.

Happy to have chosen the Clare for our home.
Decisions about how we want to live the final years of our lives are challenging , age in place , downsize to a smaller home or move to a retirement home. For us the choice, between those options was an easy one. Being without children and having a widely dispersed family we knew we wanted community and a support system for when we needed it. We knew we wanted to be in a large city to benefit from all the cultural, sports and other activities on offer. The Clare was a perfect fit for us , in the heart of downtown Chicago ,close almost everything .In addition the Clare offers a wide range of activities and programs of the highest quality so as your world gets smaller you have stimulation right at home. You can become involved in the community or you can choose to just live there and treat it as another apartment but with amenities such as a car service . The staff is warm and caring , the food is at a very high level , varied and delicious with several dining room options.

Excellent care in every way
Our Aunt received the best care possible in every aspect. She came to The Clare after hip surgery . The physical therapy she received at The Clare took her from barely being able to take a few steps to walking confidently through the halls with her walker. The team approach included OT and speech therapy, nurses and physicians. The team’s consistent and clear communication with our family was extremely helpful. Equally important to her recovery was the personal care and concern she received from everyone involved in her care. From the aide who took the time to braid her hair to the person who delivered her dinner always with a smile. The culture at The Clare and the atmosphere created and maintained begins with the executive director and extends to all who work here. The excellent care and well being of every patient/resident is clearly always the priority.

Highly recommend
The first thing we notice about The Clare is how friendly and welcoming everyone is. We have visited a number of times to see our aunt and the experiences are consistently wonderful. Our aunt is living a stress free life and she takes advantage of all The Clare has to offer. She participates in the activities, loves the food, and says the staff are extended family. The staff have even taken the time to know us too! The Clare is safe and secure which is an important feature for us.

The Clare is an exceptional community in the heart of downtown Chicago. As my husband and I are starting our search for a continuing care retirement community for two of our family members, we were impressed with The Clare from the start. We found The Clare to exceed our expectations and needs. We value that The Clare takes pride in their culinary program, life enticement programming, and fitness options. Also, being located in downtown Chicago, security is extremely important to us, my husband and I felt extremely safe with the measures the building and front desk team have in place to ensure safety of all residents. I was also able to meet several members of the management team during my tour and was very impressed with them. I look forward to working with The Clare and ensuring our beloved family members have the best of the best (which is The Clare).

Above and Beyond our expectations
My aunt recently completed her rehabilitation at The Clare after breaking her hip, and the experience exceeded every expectation. From our very first visit, the staff made our entire family feel welcome. Everyone was so friendly, and the food was exceptional. I even had the chance to meet the Executive Chef. My aunt kept saying she felt like she was staying at a resort rather than recovering from an injury. The staff went above and beyond by bringing her extra hair ties, a notebook, and even braided her hair. She also had her hair done in the salon and talked about it for days. These small, thoughtful touches meant so much to her. The therapy team was remarkable. When she arrived, she was in significant pain and barely able to move. With the nurses managing her medications and the therapists working with her each day, she slowly regained her strength. I don’t know what we would have done without The Clare. Now that she’s home, she tells me all the time how much she misses The Clare.

When I moved into The Clare, it was for convenience, but it turned out to be much more. Besides a lovely apartment, there are more things to do than I can take advantage of, more conveniences than I have ever had and more new friends than I could have imagined. Thank you to the wonderful staff.

Praise from a Five-Year Resident
As five-year residents of The Clare, among the many amenities we have enjoyed are its central location and its close proximity to the Chicago cultural institutions we support--symphony, opera, museums, and theater--and we are exceedingly grateful for the transportation to these events that The Clare provides. In addition, we greatly enjoy The Clare’s many activities for residents and the outside programs and performing groups that frequently entertain us at The Clare.

Don't wait!
I am the first of my group to move to a senior living facility; many of my friends say, "I am just not ready yet." My question is "when? if not now?" The Clare provides residents with a secure base from which to continue to live the life each of us chooses. The facilities are top-notch; the food is exceptional, the staff professional, and the residents charming and interesting, I would encourage anyone thinking "someday, but not yet" to make the move while you can enjoy all the Clare offers.

Lots of positives ~ no negatives!
My visits over the course of three days involved dealing with access to and making sense of the apartment of a now deceased resident. The staff members I encountered and was depending on were entirely accessible, anxious to be helpful, and, simply, nice. Such treatment was especially welcome since I had come from a long distance from Chicago for the mission and had no idea whatsoever as to what I'd be facing when I arrived at The Clare. I am grateful for their ministrations and comforted in knowing what to expect when I make a return visit.

Welcoming staff and residents
I would give a 5 to every question. We had high expectations, but The Clare has exceeded all our expectations. Staff and residents are all extremely welcoming and helpful. Activities are engaging. We can easily get help with anything we need. Food is excellent. Yes, it is expensive, but it is worth it. One friend who is also at The Clare lost her husband last year. She said the community here felt like a warm hug. I didn't understand what she meant until we moved here. Everyone here is so supportive.

DO NOT SEND ANYONE POST HOSPITILIZATION
NEGATIVE STARS. You will be told the Clare is one of the nicer facilities and it may be true for the nursing home portion however I have nothing nice to say regarding their rehab center. I met [name removed] the case manager to tour the facility and discuss what my mother had been through and the level of care she required. I was told the Clare was more than capable of handling her needs however that was a blatant lie. This is NOT an adequate rehabilitation facility for post hospitalization patients. The staff is under trained, under qualified and under staffed. I was incredibly clear on my mothers condition and the level of patience and care needed to keep her comfortable. Not only did they not respect our wishes; they did the exact opposite. They bullied my mother and when she asked them to please be more gentle with her and to stop hurting her she was told if she didn't like their treatment she could go back to the hospital. They also told her she needed to leave because they were i

Review of The Clare
My parents have been at The Clare since 2008, first in Independent Living, then my Father in Memory care and now my mother in Assisted Living. They chose the Clare as their plan for retirement. They both have enjoyed it as a place of social enrichment, engaging activity and an overall good place to spend their senior years. My father received excellent care on the memory floor and skilled nursing before he passed. For the past several years my mom has been in Assisted Living. I believe I can speak for all of my siblings when I say the quality of the staff at The Clare is very good, meeting all of our expectations. The care she receives gives us all peace that she is in a very good place. Any time I have a concern or issue, the Clare is responsive and meets the need quickly. We are grateful they chose The Clare!

The Clare does not care.
A very good friend of many years was extremely happy with this place until she suffered a stroke, was paralyzed and had to move to the assisted living floor. What a disaster! These floors are so thinly staffed that proper care cannot be given. We have had to go outside of The Clare and hire our own care team and still The Clare fights us. This has been a most sad experience. If you do not have someone who can fight for your loved one - they will not help and will wait until they die so they may turn over the room. A very sad experience!

It is very expensive. If money is no object then this is the place to go. The food is terrific. They have been great with the Covid -19. The units are small but they are all small everywhere. The staff is wonderful. They have a walking track and outdoor space on the 9th floor.

Beautiful Gold Coast neighborhood. Very secure but Memory care not suitable at this time. Only a shared suite. Dining area was dark and cramped. Also, very expensive and probably too much of an urban environment for my loved one. Did not tour assisted living but may be a good option fo those who don't need memory care and who want to be in the heart of the city.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know Illinois’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. A Place for Mom has scored The Clare 9.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.   We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.   Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
