Very Dissatisfied
They have had many problems. Difficult workers, lack of care etc. Since the state came in I believe they have tried to change bit still ongoing problems. The memory unit is very small without much freedom or care. Our time there was very unsatisfactory from staff, food on down. I hope that good changes are coming for the residents in both units.

Love the Laurels!
To say putting your parents in assisted-living is a difficult decision is putting it mildly. From the minute I we walked into The Laurels, it felt like home. My mind was instantly put at ease when we sat down with [name removed] and went through our options. Not only was she patient and kind, but [name removed] was positive and energetic about the Laurels lifestyle. She took us on a tour which ultimately sealed the deal for us. My mom and dad are loving their “new normal” at the Laurels. Thank you to [name removed] and the staff for making them feel so special every day. I’m truly the most grateful daughter ever.

Happy resident that found her forever home
I moved to The Laurels four years ago from Washington, DC to be closer to my daughter. One of my favorite things is the three provided meals per day. We have a chef and she does a great job providing quality/nutritious food. We always have games and interactive activities to increase your brain activity. You will never be bored! Everyone here is kind and goes out of their way to make you feel comfortable.

Don't Recommend !! Much Better Going Somewhere Else.
Though the actual facility is lovely, the place has a terribly toxic environment. The employees hate the administration. They are understaffed and just cited by the State in a recent review. Employees are tired. Money is their primary motive, not care of residents. My husband's room was always filthy. I felt I had to go every day just to be sure he was ok. The administration will not answer questions or respond at all. Caregivers mean well but your loved one will not get even basic care at this place. Very disappointing. I moved my husband and cannot recommend this place at all.

Pros and cons
The day-to-day staff at both facilities are great, very helpful and caring. The Laurels facility is beautiful, well maintained, and inviting. The Haven is in desperate need of more regular staffing (nurses, CNAs, etc) so each neighborhood can be fully staffed. Right now, they pull other staff (I.e.) activities staff, to fill holes. Or bring over staff from the Laurels (who are not trained to be with memory care patients) to fill empty spots.

It’s not perfect, but it’s working
Our loved one is being cared for better than we could manage. We do have some issues with The Haven. She suffered a fall between breakfast and lunch and it was not discovered until lunch was brought to her. She ended up going to the hospital and needed four stitches above her eye. Could have been worse. There are no fall detection cameras in the rooms, so a fall may go unnoticed for a period of time. We don’t know what she’s involved in on a daily basis. They do have an open door policy and the ability to email them at any time for information. But we have to ask for it. However, our loved one is suffering from ideations where she thinks people are out to harm her and they seem to be managing that for us very well. We were told we could install our own security camera to watch our loved one, but we were unable to connect to the facility’s WiFi successfully, and no one seems to be able to help us with this issue. Generally, we are satisfied, but some improvements might be in order.

Thank you, Susan, for sharing your feedback. Resident safety is a top priority, and while we respect privacy by not having cameras in apartments, our team conducts wellness checks based on personal care plans to monitor residents. Resident focused home
Good programs and supporting staff focused on residents quality of life. They try to meet the residents where they are in their dementia journey. Some turnover in senior staff and administration makes communication slow at times. However complete attention to family needs are addressed when meeting/phone calls occur.

Still happy after one year
In general staff seem competent My mom does not need a lot of care and oversight. But they know each resident. They respond appropriately in emergencies They have a point system which they share which determines level of care and any additional cost The medication management has improved as has administrative communication They have resident meetings each month They take the residents to doctors appointments which is very helpful The kitchen and dining staff are very sweet and the food is plentiful , taste good and good portions and they serve a lot of fresh fruit along w all types of meat and full healthy breakfasts every day in addition to a flexible menus if the resident doesn't like the specials for the day. Snacks are avail 24/7 in the activity room

Understaffed presently affecting services
The staff that works with the residence is phenomenal. Every resident there is happy and loves the staff. As the caregiver, my issues are supposed to be done twice a week have been times when they haven’t done it once a week. Rooms are supposed to be cleaned once a week bed linens changed, it took three weeks at one point. I think this is a staffing issue. The director just left so hopefully this is a short term problem when you send an email to the appropriate person it does get handled but right now as a caregiver I have to stay on top of it.

Very disappointed
The staff is great. Very attentive to their clients. However the staff is not treated well by the administrators and turnover reduces service levels. That was my primary reason for relocating my client. Upon departure after giving ample notice to terminate residency and departing on the final day an administrator approached me and the departing resident only to deliver her displeasure with the termination and a vowel to retaliate. This was delivered in front of service staff members and one administrative staff member. I had difficulty getting good information during the stay and was referred to staff outside of the resident center to get answers to questions. Another family member regarded the entire admin staff as mere paper pushers . It went all the way to headquarters because that woman even tried to charge me beyond the stay even though we left the building the night of the residents last official day.

Quality of care is lacking
Before we moved to the Laurels, I asked very specific questions of how care is provided as my mom had a stroke and is paralyzed on one side. She is incontinent and needs help bathing, dressing and transferring. I was assured when her call bell was pressed, she would wait no longer than 15 minutes for someone to come to her assistance. We moved her in on [date removed] and in those few months, the quality of care has proven to be very bad. Today I filed a complaint with the state. There are times she waits over an hour for someone to come, once three hours. My father has had to walk the halls looking for a staff member to assist on dozens of occasions. I have personally met with the Ex Director and Head of Nursing and addressed this issue and no action is ever taken. At this point they are not answering my emails and treating my father with a very hostile attitude. I’m just shocked that this place is run this way. There is a complete lack of leadership. Many residents agree.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know North Carolina’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about North Carolina’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
