In case you are now having to make a decision of what to do to provide the best memory care for your loved one, I want to share our experience and to give you hope. My mom and dad had self isolated for 9 years prior to this. We knew they were hiding something and my brother chose to drop in announced. Calls to visit were denied previously as "they had plans for the day and would not be home". My parents had always promised each other for over 70 years that they would not put one another in a nursing home. So they did not let us visit and only face timed the last 9 years "due to Covid". We as their children learned in one afternoon they had hidden years of Mom's health & their daily life from us. My dad was a nervous wreck. He took my brother to mom. She was on the floor in the bedroom and told my brother she was just resting her back and always took a nap this way. The fact that mom's physical abilities were so diminished that she was falling frequently, plus my 90 year old dad was trying to lift or pick her up was heartbreaking. We moved her and dad to an assisted living facility (not Iris) I learned in a few days there was a many much bigger problems that had been kept from us. 2 weeks into assisted living, I took my dad to the ER due to injuring his back trying to lift her after another fall because she would not let him call staff for help. Dad was admitted to the hospital and I moved in to care for mom in his absence. We thought she had falling & mobility issues mainly. My parents had not told us Mom had Parkinson's. What I saw was she was also now having safety issues mentally as well. I hired a sitter to stay with her a few hours at a time, then started looking at and touring 12 nursing homes and facilities for memory care in Oklahoma City to find a place to meet our standards. I was so disappointed with the options available and knew I could not put Mom and dad together in one. Iris was always absolutely spotless. I went there 3 to 4 times that week unscheduled to get a realistic view of the care being given to the residents. I was always welcomed by the staff and all my questions were answered. There was never anything out of place. The facility always smelt fresh and clean, the the patients were also clean, dressed appropriately and out of their rooms engaged in an activity or relaxing in the common area. My siblings agreed that moving mom to Iris was the best plan for her. My only drawback was Iris insisted that after we moved Mom in we were not to visit or contact her for 2 weeks. I was not happy with this direction at all. I was promised if at any time in that 2 weeks I would be contacted immediately for any issues. That staff at Iris all met together with me to set up a care plan and told me that their experience proved putting mom on a schedule rather than just letting her sleep to be safe, would be the best choice for mom. I agreed to move her there and try their process. 2 weeks to the minute later, my dad and I went to visit her. She was a totally different person, happy, laughing, talking clearly and introducing us to everyone that came by to say hi as we visited. My mom put her arm around them and greeted everyone by name. The process worked! Mom was there 6 months before she passed away in November. She remained very happy, ate each meal with new friends, drank coffee and had snacks any time she wanted. Her nails were manicured weekly, my hairdresser went once a week to their on site beauty salon to keep her on her schedule (since 1953) of getting her hair done weekly. She was loved, the staff took time to sit and talk with her, she was tucked in at night. She was safe and told us at every visit what adventures she'd had and what was on the next day's schedule. My dad was so grateful and so relieved that she had the care she needed. He started this feeling like he was not keeping his promise to her to not go to a nursing home. After the first month, he saw the woman he loved for almost 72 years living her best life again surrounded by friends. She told us every time we saw her 4-5 times weekly that she was happy. Who could ask for more?

My sister was asked to leave her former residence unexpectedly. She had no place to go. A Place for Mom referred us to Iris. We met with [name removed] and [name removed] the next day late in the afternoon. We had already visited two other homes earlier in the day. We were so impressed when [name removed] showed insightful understanding of my sister’s condition and needs. By the time we left Iris later that evening our sister had been accepted as a new resident. Two days later she moved in. The transition for my sister and us, her family, has been rocky at times. However, thanks to the caring and supportive staff at Iris, things have gotten much better and my sister is now happier than she has been in a long time.

1. Can visit loved one anytime (after the initial 2 weeks). Staff is very welcoming when you go to visit. 2. Lots of activities daily for the residents to participate in. Unfortunately my mother doesn't participate as much these days. 3. The facility has a Facebook page where they post pictures of residents almost daily. It's comforting to see pictures of your loved one when you can see them daily. 4. Friendly staff - they care about the residents and can give you updates on any concerns/changes with your loved one. 5. Special events for the residents and their loved ones.

I recently visited Iris Memory Care, Dallas, Texas and took a full tour of the facility. I met with [name removed] in the Administration/Marketing Department who answered all my questions, introduced my to the Head of their Nursing Department and was taken on a full tour of the entire facility. All residents were clean and nicely dressed and appeared to receive highest levels of individual and group care. The living quarters were all very clean and personally furnished to provide both mental and physical comfort. The apartments were of two sizes and more than adequate not to feel cramped. The grounds were well maintained so when people were outside they were in a garden environment with lots of shrubs and flowers. Overall I give Iris Memory Care a "Superior" rating and will not have any reservations about moving a loved one to this facility because I feel comfortable they will receive the best of care.

Our experience with Iris has been excellent. The staff is absolutely the best and truly love the people living there. They are committed and it is obvious they have a passion for older people especially those with Alzheimer’s. They engage with them and have continuous activities to keep the loved ones active, involved and loved. Those that are able go in activities outside. They have family events and they communicate well with the families. I highly recommend Iris to anyone that has a loved one with Alzheimer’s

We have had a good experience (so far) and although it was a very hard decision to make, it is what was best for my mother. She is encouraged to participate in daily activities that provides a stimulating and supportive environment. She has friends and is part of a community that she wouldn't have if she were at home. Iris has a good staff to resident ratio but situations will come up and it's important to be an advocate for your family member. The staff is friendly and helpful but can be aloof at times so that's when being an advocate for your loved one is critical. During the weekend there are less activities and there seems to be less staff around so atmosphere is different. We enjoy spending time alone with my mother in her room so she can piddle around in the room. I would highly recommend Iris and like that it's strictly a memory care facility. The staff are well trained and enjoy working with dementia residents. Iris also offers a monthly support group for families which we have found to be very helpful.

We had mama there from June till March when she passed. She was on hospice for a few months. The facility is small and has a limited amount of residents. There are private and semi private rooms. They did a good job with keeping the residents clean in regards to diaper changes. The staff was sweet with my mother. They do eat early dinners and start bedtime early which works well there. They staff down at night which means if you show up later you may need to wait to get help in and out of the locked doors (no big deal). The hospice used there was absolutely wonderful throughout the dying process. They were super at giving me updates and letting me know what is going on while I was at work. Called me when they saw changes and sat with me and her until she passed. She was well taken care of and staff is caring and I would suggest this place go others. All places have their problems but any time I saw something that needed attention they addressed it and listened to my concerns.

Staff is wonderful. Move in was very easy. There is always an open line of communication. My father sometimes, most of the time, likes the food. But sometimes he doesn't. I think that's just a thing. The only thing I would say is this: this particular Iris location does not have a support group. I believe the Iris further north of the city does. I would like to see one at the N. May location. My Mom could really benefit from such a program. Driving further North for her is not an option.

Evening staff is not always adequate. But they try. Memory patients are unpredictable and hard to control. We are comfortable enough that we are try not to criticize. There are many care givers who are obviously very dedicated and treat dad with great kindness and empathy. Some are more business like. I have never seen anyone treat dad badly. We have a camera in his room so we can see most everything.

Gram the moment I walked through doors. I could feel the warmth. It was nice and clean. There was a balloon volleyball game on with the residents. Along with a baking class, they were making strawberry cupcakes. But what impressed me the most was how caring the staff was with the residents.

We have had [name removed] in another facility that was ridiculous in price and he had really no attention at all. This facility especially [name removed] has been the nicest and most carrying . [name removed] always makes sure [name removed] our cousin has the best care and he is busy every moment and seems to really enjoy it . We couldn’t be more pleased and have a peace of mind knowing he’s in good hands. Thank you [name removed] for all you do :).
