They do not have enough staff, especially overnight, to handle someone if they need a higher tiered level of care (which they offer for $$). Its unfortunate. They offer it....but can't possibly deliver it.

Lack of consistent staff is a huge problem! Sometimes they go three weeks without their rooms being cleaned. When my dad had Covid, they did not check on him at all. They even forget to feed him dinner one night. It's a good thing I am only four minutes away.

Would recommend. Overall nice community
The common areas are very clean, however, Mom's room rarely gets cleaned because they can't keep staff. Between my sister and I we keep her room clean, but we pay for this service, so we are not happy about that. Otherwise, it's a nice place, friendly and caring staff. She is happy there

Poor follow through
Things that were supposed to be being done were not. After several requests many of the problems were still not being addressed or taken care of. Another resident kept coming in my mom’s room and stealing stuff from her. They were asked several times to keep her door locked but even after several request it was not being done.

Response from Dougherty Ferry Assisted Living and Memory Care
June 13, 2025
Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. We are truly sorry to hear that your experience did not meet expectations, and we take feedback like this seriously. We want to assure you that the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of our residents are our highest priorities. In a licensed memory care setting, we are required to follow strict regulatory guidelines that govern many aspects of care—including room access and door locking. While we understand the desire for additional privacy and protection, memory care regulations and safety codes generally prohibit locking resident doors in a way that would restrict staff access or delay emergency response. These guidelines exist to protect all residents, particularly those with cognitive challenges who may be at risk for falls, elopement, or medical emergencies. That said, we understand your concern about repeated apartment entries by another resident and the distress that may have caused. While we cannot share specific resident details due to privacy laws, we do investigate all such reports thoroughly and put interventions in place to prevent recurrence. If you feel your requests were not fully addressed, we sincerely regret that and would welcome the opportunity to revisit the situation directly. Please know that our goal is always to provide a secure, respectful, and supportive environment for every resident and their family. If you would like to speak further, we would be glad to arrange a private discussion at your convenience.

Greatly improved
We have been there a year. The care was horrifying. 5 ED's in one year. I don't even bother to write their names down now. THEN, around [date removed], [name removed] was hired as the head RN. Can't say enough good things about her. I worry about her work load. My dad passed and many of the residents have surrounded my mom with love and care. We have gotten to know the residents as I come into town 3 weeks at a time and I have a sibling over there every other day and my brother spends the night mid-week. The activities group is amazing. We were sold on that then realized it doesn't matter if they aren't getting their meds (they weren't) but now that they are, we really appreciate that Mom has 2+ activities/day that she attends. She has a good life - don't listen to her complaining - she always did that!

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful and honest reflection on your experience. We recognize that this past year has brought significant challenges, and we sincerely regret the instability and concerns you faced early on. Consistent leadership is critical in delivering quality care, and we understand the frustration that comes with turnover in such a vital role. We are incredibly grateful for your acknowledgment of our director of nursing - she is indeed a dedicated and compassionate leader, and your support means a great deal. Please know that we are mindful of workloads and continue to evaluate how we can best support our care teams to ensure they can continue delivering the high level of service our residents deserve. We're also touched to hear how much the community of residents has embraced your mother and your family. It's clear how deeply involved and present you are, and that partnership makes all the difference. We’re so pleased that your mom is now receiving the care she needs and is actively engaged in activities that bring her joy and fulfillment. Thank you again for your feedback—it helps us grow, and we truly value your continued trust and connection with our community.

Beautiful but cold
I want to love this place - great location - great rooms. The staffing isn't great. Mom even broke her hip and the staff didn't know where the ambulance took her. Next morning we got a call that mom was missing (not in her room). No follow-up after her break. Would love staff that want to care for seniors, know their names, check on their well being. There did not seem to be the personal touch. If you need assistance or extra care, not really the place for your person.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We truly appreciate your kind words about the location and the community itself, and we understand your desire to feel fully confident in the care your mother receives. We are deeply sorry to hear about the situation following your mother’s injury. The lack of communication and follow-up you experienced is unacceptable and not reflective of the standard of care we strive to provide. Ensuring our residents are safe, supported, and personally known by our team is at the heart of our mission—and we regret that this was not your experience. Your feedback is incredibly important and will be shared with our leadership team for immediate review. We are committed to making meaningful improvements, particularly in the areas of responsiveness, continuity of care, and personal connection. Thank you again for your honesty and for giving us the opportunity to do better. Your mother—and every resident—deserves compassionate, attentive care, and we remain dedicated to achieving that standard.

Lost Dignity
Our experience with Dougherty Ferry AL AND MC has been a nightmare. Staff changes are frequent. In our 16 months with the facility, there were 3 executive directors, 4 directors of nursing, 3 business managers, 2 sales managers, numerous receptionists and countess resident aides and housekeepers. Communication goes unanswered for days/weeks, and is often not responded to at all. There seems to be no recourse when care plans are not followed by staff, and refunds for services NOT provided is not granted. You must fight for the rights of your loved one frequently Even cameras installed in your loved ones room does NOT guarantee needs will be met. Regional managers are most often no help as well. After we found our father soaking wet from mid back to knees three times in one week with NO COMMUNICATION BY STAFF as to WHY his care plan was not being followed, we left facility. A refund was not granted, apologies were not offered and we still await a response from numerous staff members.

excellent assisted-living experience
I would give it a five for all seven categories for my mother's experience. Everyone there is friendly and they treat my mother very well. She has a community there and has lots of activities to choose from to keep her mind and body healthy. She also can get excellent physical therapy when she needs it. The food there is excellent as well, and all of the people that worked there are very attentive to her and the others that are there.

Overall a nice facility
It's a nice facility but there are staffing issues. My mother has been a resident for 3 months and has had her apartment cleaned 4 times by the staff. (It is supposed to be cleaned weekly.) My sister and I have had to fill in when we visit. We do like that she has her own washer/dryer in her room, the food is good and there are a variety of activities for her to participate in. Overall we are pleased with Dougherty Ferry Assisted Living.

Beware
My mom had to be moved to Memory Care. No-one watched her take her medications. We found medicine cups filled with meds. My mom was also stashing meds in random hiding places. There was poor communication from staff to me, as I lived out of town and was only able to visit her on the weekends. I saw her on Sunday when we took her out of the facility for dinner. I received a call Friday saying that my mom refused food all week, refused a shower all week, was not taking her medications all week, that her whole room smelled like urine and BO, that she was a danger to herself and had to be sent to the hospital. I called multiple times throughout the week to check on my mom, because mom wasn't feeling up to talking. Everyone said she was fine until Friday when they said she wasn't. Very high staff turnover. Unfortunately, my mom passed away shortly after her stay there. The biggest thing I learned is that if you place a loved one in Assisted living or memory care, you have to visit them EVERYDAY.

POOR FACILITY
Do not consider Dougherty Ferry for your loved one. They are understaffed, disorganized, do not live up to the expectations of the residential contract. Don't expect anyone to return a call or an email - it doesn't happen. I left hand-written messages at the front desk and no one responded. They do not administer medication responsibly. Memory care residents do not receive cues for meals, hygiene, or medication. On several occasions we overheard residents at the front desk complaining they have not received needed medications. There is no respect for our elderly.

A Place for Mom has scored Dougherty Ferry Assisted Living and Memory Care 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.   We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.   Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
