our family's experience, friendly staff, would recommend.

I would give all categories a 5 with the exception of the activities, only because my dad has no interest in participating in the activities so I don't know how well they do. The overall experience of the tour and initial meetings were good. My only negative was I would have liked to know about the non-refundable Community Fee sooner. I didn't know about it until I went in to sign the Contract and it was [Amount Removed]. It caught me by surprise. I was told what the monthly rent would be and cost of care and level of care ahead of time but not the Community Fee. Everyone was very helpful with the transition. There were a couple of issues with my dad's dietary requirements being met and it took several follow-ups by me & my dad's doctor to the Executive staff and a month to get it resolved and implemented properly. The facility is beautiful and clean and so is his room. We chose the one bedroom as it was the only room available and it's very nice. My dad is very happy with it. The one bedroom is very spacious. I've seen the studios just in passing and the studio is very small so I'm glad we went with the one bedroom. The studio was $[Amount Removed] month and the one bedroom was $[Amount Removed]/month. It seemed expensive to me but two other places I contacted were even more expensive than that so we settled on Discovery Commons.

Discovery Commons is a beautiful facility- exactly the kind of place you’d want your loved one to be cared for and cherished during their time of need. They offered the type and kind of continuity of care services needed by families seeking assisted living and memory care options for their loved one.

beware and observe

Here's the problem. I couldn't control or handle my husband's change in behavior. So he went to Whittier Place. It turned out that he had a severe urinary tract infection which caused a psychotic episode. He also was diagnosed with stage 1 dementia. As the infection cleared up he was acting pretty much like his normal self. But the head nurse kept telling me that he would have these issues again and that he should stay there. As my husband continued to improve I realized that he was not like all the other people in the locked section and so I took him home after being there almost four months. And it proved to be the right decision. What really bothered me was that no one, including the director and head nurse, ever said maybe he should to be reevaluated. I feel like they were more interested in the bottom line than in my husband's welfare. What they did was wrong and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. It was clean there. My husband liked the food. Most of the workers were friendly. I would give the head nurse and the director both ones.

Review for Discovery Commons Whittier

I found the place to be nice cheery and clean. The staff was nice and friendly. The place had a very nice court yard for people to walk around in. I loved the court yard. The food was good for the most part except my father did not like the taste of the meat. I have only one minor criticism. The medical care was mediocre at best. We changed my father's family doctor for the health program at the facility. They only had s nurse practitioner that came on a few days a week and no medical doctor. My father had to have his meds changed a few times so a doctor would have been nice. Regarding the medical services there, they were ok but I expected more for all the money we paid. Everything else was great.

Doors that open into a pleasant and friendly home

Was very impressed with all that I experienced there. Felt very comfortable leaving my mother during her stay at Discovery. Starting from the receptionist, office personnel, the care givers were always friendly and helpful. Definitely would consider if I need another stay for mom, I would feel comfortable having her stay.

Whittier Place Experience

This was a positive environment. It was clean, luxurious and the staff was very nice. The food in the cafeteria was good. I like the music they played in the lobby as well as the outside courtyard. I think it is important to find a place where the residents can go outside and walk and a large courtyard is good for that.

My Family’s Experience with Whittier Place

Whittier Place has been a very good experience for my brother. The environment is clean, welcoming and attractive. The staff is friendly, accommodating and ready to help you when needed. Communication between staff and management is efficient so that when you have a request or need staff relays it to managers to get needed answers in a timely manner. Whittier Place has provided my brother with an overall safe, clean, caring residence.

Not recommended

My loved one was previously a resident at Whittier Place Senior Living. This facility was good until Watermark took over. Then it was TERRIBLE. The care went way down and the price went way up. They conveniently 'lost' my loved one's wheelchair the day that we moved him out and only when Hospice said that was the second one they "lost" and would have to reimburse them did it suddenly get "found". I would not recommend Whittier Place Senior Living to others.

Our families experienced

My aunts are very happy with the place. I haven't been able to spend a lot of time there with her since I live far away, but according to my aunts I would have to say a 4 for the overall experience. There has been a few they told me they had to remind her about somethings that were not being done and it was taken care of.

Whittier Place is excellent!

My 95 year old father has been in assisted living at Whittier Place since April of 2018. We have had a good experience there overall, but especially lately. In addition to having hired a truly outstanding Activities Director, they have also given her a new and much-needed assistant, and so more and more social activities are happening. These include interactive music events, exercise classes, games, and a variety of regular social activities, which are so important for keeping the residents happy, sharp, and active. I am also very pleased with the other support staff, including the medical personnel and also the various receptionists and caregivers. These people truly take a personal interest in my dad, and this goes a long way toward his happiness there. [name removed], the new Executive Director, is really trying to up the game by making strategic improvements and seeking an enhanced experience for the residents and their families. I see good things ahead for Whittier Place.

Nicer than a convalescent or boarder home

My family and loved one had an average experience with the community. The biggest suggestion we have is ask lot of questions, to make sure the community is the right fit for your loved one. Some questions could be the ratio of caregivers to residents, what type of activities are available, what are meals like, and what specific care are they able to provide. The biggest thing is to make sure you are being your loved one's advocate during this process.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know California’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about California’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
